In Speak Your Mind
Hi - I want to thank you for your activism leadership in these crazy times. I live in Alaska and am on the steering committee of our local Indivisible group Mat-Su United for Progress. We are planning our third march for Tuesday. We are a small town, the marches draw 100-150 people. Hopefully more this time around. I have attended a couple of rallies in Anchorage led by Stand-up Alaska. They have drawn maybe 200-250. They are good and full of energy but, in my opinion, way too small. And I wonder how long we can keep people involved in a red state and with the constant onslaught of violence to our country from Washington. This morning I read an editorial by Susan Glasser in the New Yorker entitled “Why Aren’t we in the Streets?” Check it out. At first it pissed me off, and i said to myself “we are! why aren’t YOU?” While I am annoyed that she never acknowledges that there are small protests across the country, I concede that she does have a point. She mentions the fact that even in Germany they had a major demonstration against the trump administration.  I can’t say that I know how to do this .. but I believe we need a major march on Washington and maybe in major cities across the country. We need a show of millions, we need civil disobedience. Alaska is a long ways from DC but I would find a way to participate.  I am 70 years with vivid memories of the activism in the 60s and 70s. Are people too busy and too apathetic to participate in a democracy that we see rapidly deteriorating? What can we do? I would love to hear your thoughts on next steps. Thanks for listening.
